The Deer and The Lion
A pair of full-colour Gond paintings by Rameshwar Dhruve in acrylic on canvas — a sambar deer and his signature front-facing tiger, two animals the Gond community considers carriers of good fortune. Both are painted in Rameshwar’s distinctive style, with bold colour sections and freehand pattern work you won’t find in any other Gond artist’s hand.

Rameshwar has always believed that things go well whenever he spots a sambar deer on the way to work — in Gond belief, a running sambar crossing your path is a sign of good fortune. The tree on the tiger’s back is a Palash tree, known in English as the Flame of the Forest. Its flowers are what Gond paintings were traditionally made with, and its blooms are still used to make Holi colours.
The round-faced, front-facing tiger is peculiar to Rameshwar’s work — no other Gond artist draws it this way. The same goes for the coloured grass tufts at the base of his paintings. These two elements are his identifiers; once you’ve seen them, you’ll recognise his hand across any piece.
Both are built in acrylic on canvas, each animal split into sections of different pattern and colour — all freehand. The blue wave-scale pattern appears across both paintings, tying them together as a pair.
